So I was fumbling around the back of my cabinet when I suddenly heard and saw a spark and a noise from the power plug that goes into my external drive. Not good obviously, and my worst fear was realized when I found it not to be in working order, i.e. completely dead. And so the question is simple; what are the steps to take? Should I just rush to the nearest recovery place or is there something I can try out for myself first without being too much MacGyver-like? It is a WD drive if that matters.

Hello,
I am about to buy new hard drive and have reads loads of forum discussions about there particular disk. There are people who say WD is better and there are people who say Samsung is better.
Also the conversations I read were usually over 9 months old.
What I like about the WD is the 64MB cache, two chips and 3 platters – I am very probably gonna settle for that one.
I have in mind this particular one http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=551 or its 1TB alternative.
Which one would you pick?
Would it be better to just put the disc onto a new HDD? I have some very important files that I don’t want to lose by just throwing the burned HDD away (I think it was burned by a short inside the computer), and the HDD won’t boot on any computer. I already have a new, clean HDD.
You dont have to believe me but it does work. I didnt believe it at first but I gave it a try.

I was using up like 1.06gb of ram decompressing a split rar, using windows media center and using firefox. I ran RAMdef v2.6 XT it used up like all my 2gb of ram the it went down to 0.83gb. I thought it was a coincidence, so I tryed it many times in different scenarios and it works (It does nothing if you use it 2 times in a row).
… back into its original case but wont boot from it. it appears it doesnt see it. error #’s 5-(floppy), and 8-something like "fake floppy not found", then says press any key to continue but wont recognize keystroke, but, i can navigate in the bios using the keyboard. i want to eventually restore the oem software with the recovery disk, and i tried that too but it again wont acknowledge keystokes.
I had put the hdd in my new build unill the new hdd was set up with new os, but didnt change anything on it.
what to do?
thanks
im wanting to upgrade my hard drive to a 1tb because the one i have is starting to mess up and dose not have allot of life left. I was going to get a cheap 2tb but now i have been suggested towards a good 1tb. SO i was wondering i was to get
this hard drive and if I transfer my OS and stuff onto it could later on i go and buy another one of those hard drives and use raid0 and how would i go about doing that:confused:
my 200gb hard drive is about to fail and it is full. So i want to get a new bigger one. i store allot of movies and songs on my hard drive and i cant decide weather to get a nice 1tb or a cheap 2tb. I only have 120 bucks to spend and i will be using it as my main hard drive. so can some one give me some advice on what hard drive i should buy to replace my almost broken one? here is one i was looking at
here thanks for the advice in advance
I am going to update from 2gb to 4 and I dont know which type would be supported for my motherboard. I have a Dell XPS 730 but I don’t know if I can put in any memory or what to look for :/
Alright well currently my Toshiba Satellite has an issue. It boots up and says "PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable, PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM" and continues and repeats that.
If I go into the bios, the harddrive is noticed aswell as the DVD Drive that they are in SATA1 and SATA2, but if i go to boot, only CD. FDD. LAN is listen, no HDD. If i use my windows 7 disk and repair it says some new device was inserted, and wont work, but it will boot into windows 7 with the disc no problem, after a system restore. I restart the computer and processes starts again..
i want to rebuild my file server.
it’s currently running a 1tb drive under windows 2003 server.
i want to give freenas another chance (was a real pain setting up user permissions before)
n-e-ways, i have a rosewill rc-2009-ex 4 sata port pci adapter. it obviously does not do hardware raid.
i was looking for a hardware raid card on newegg, but they all cost an arm or a leg, some cost both :D and i don’t want to spend any more than a P3 is worth :P
does anybody have any experience with linux software raid on a relatively old cpu? is it really as bad as they say it is?
i want to get three of the WD RE3 1tb drives if it matters.
thanks
Hi ALL
I have a friend who has an Fujitsu Amilo Pro v3515 Laptop that has only a 40GB HDD and needs help finding a higher capacity and speed for his laptop.
However, the manual and online guides don’t give supported speeds or max capacity, the current drive is 5400rpm.
So will a 7200rpm be supported by his laptop? with a capacity of 500GB or more?
Please advise,
Thank You
I have a HP G61-336NR and i am having some diffuculty with. I replaced the heyboard, and now it just wont start. When I push the power button, the WLAN and power com on, but the screen is black and the NUM LOCK and CAPS LOCK lights just flash.
At first, I thought it may be the ram, but i have tested both of the Ram cards in my Lenovo, and both work. and since my Lenovo is a PATA hdd, i cant test the HDD on it.
Could this be a HDD failure, or maybe a GPU failure??
tomorrow i would like to try and set up a raid 0. i’ve always thought it way beyond my ability,…..
after reading tutorials and manuals i am not convinced i will succeed, so i was hoping i could have a few checks before proceeding.
i went to the asus website and downloaded this;;; http://support.asus.com/download/dow…Language=en-us
then winrar extracted the files (i think). post a pic soon . in the files extracted are x86, 3 files which is what i need for win 7 x 64 i would think, but there is other stuff in there too for x64 which would be a 32 bit os. anyway should i just transfer it all on to a usb stick (no floppy)and see how it goes ?
using sata 1 and 2 ports is recom’nd. when booting up after installing , in this case 2 60gb ssd’s i have to press ctrl + f, according to the manual. this allows amd’s software to be opened to configure the raid and i also need to set the raid mode in bios. ie not ide, but raid. simple enough, but just to check, do the ssds need to be installed and the bios set to raid before i can access ctrl + f ….thankyou.

Is there any tips someone can give me that I can use to try and save about 15 gigs of data off a failed hard drive that will not load. While it is connected to my computer the computer seems sluggish while starting up even tho bios detects the hard drive. Once in windows I can not see the hard drive in the My Computer window. This drive was a place i stored pictures, school work, resumes, and other random things. I rather not go through some data recovery company because that is pricey.
I heard there are some things I can do to get access to the drive one final time. Anyone have any ideas that I can try?
the drive is a Seagate Barracuda 250 gb 7200
Hi I’m in the process of building a gaming PC and I’ve come to a halt with what SSD and HDD to get? I was going to get a 1TB but it doesn’t have a fast RPM speed. I don’t know anything about an SSD if anyone has any knowledge of an SSD I’d like to know so i can get this show on the road haha.
Hey guy This weekend my dad got new motherboard and i took one of his 1gb DDR2 ram sticks out and put it in my computer which also is for DDR2 i have it in there now but when i put it in i noticed the ram i put in out of dads computer was bigger then the one that its next to……. I didnt need to force this new ram stick or anything and its working my computer is now saying i have 3gb of ram but just wondering if it can be damaging to my computer becuase it looks totally different to the 2gb one that came with my computer.
kind of a newb to computers. i dont even know if this is the right area to post. i have a laptop running vista and the batery wont charge but everything else works fine. i just bought a new laptop which runs windows 7 and now i want to transfer all the files from the old one to the new one. the only problem is that the battery has no more power so the old laptop wont turn on. is there a way to transfer the data through the usb port eventhough i cant turn one of them on? or do i have to open up the old computer inside and take out the hard drive? i heard of something called "Easy transfer cables", will that help? any info would be appreciated. Thank you
Hey guys, new to the forum. I just inherited my grandfathers laptop after his passing, and I’m looking through and I saw that I have disk 0 with 145 gb and disk 1 with 145 gb. it seems like they are partitioned and I am un aware on how to merge them, what do I do?
Hi everybody,
I have a 500 GB (500GiB) HDD with two partitions…
The first one about 460 GiB was hidden and the last one is about 5 GiB…
This HDD is an external USB drive..
Due to a mistake I did a diskpart > clean command on this HDD…
But after I realized that the disk was unallocated I didn’t make anything… (no format)
So I’m sure that all my datas are here…
The software I used (****** data recovery wizard) found all my files but only let me to save them on a specific location within my internal drive (whith a capacity of 160GB) which is not enough large…
The only solution I get was to restore all the files from my external HDD to another (good) external HDD which I don’t have…
What will be the solution to recover only the partition settings information on my HDD itself (and of course getting all my files) ?
Thank you (and scuse my poor english please)
I’ve been using an Online Store for a while called The Memory Store which has always given me good service. I need to buy 2 sticks of 2G RAM and I’ll save $40 if I buy the Memory Store’s own brand or pay $40 if I buy a name brand from them. What do you advise or will the difference be nonexistent? Thanks
ok my 200gb hard drive is acting screwy, but hey its old who can blame it. So i wanna just say forget it and buy a 2tb drive to replace my 200gb. What would be the best way to get all my info from one drive to the other? I’m making a backup disk and i was wondering if that would do it? Could i just connect my new drive install ubuntu then run my backup disc and have all my stuff on my new drive?
Hi, I have an IDE hard drive, windows XP.

Hi all,
I get 2 Kingston SDHC class4 4GB memory card, when I plug in my P105-S6134 toshiba laptop, it can’t read it. But when I plug in this card in my other toshiba A215-S5837 laptop, it worked. how come? according to toshiba specifications, two laptop use the same media reader.
5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter
o Secure Digital, Memory StickÂ, Memory Stick PROÂ,
Multi Media Card, xD Picture Card [shared slots]
That is what toshiba specifications on the two laptop? Any one has any idea how come?
Also these cards can’t work on none of my other computers HP A430N, Gateway MX6124 and MX6214 Laptop, Gateway desktop 508GE. Except my Girlfriend MSI u100 netbook. it works in the netbook.
Sould I avoid these kind Flash memory in the future? or I should buy a USB multi-card reader?
Thank you.

Hello Everyone..
i have a problem on my server… my problem just send me a big monster server with 40klg.. and now i’ve try to set it up..
The Server has a 2 SATA hard drive on it.. 10,000RPM. 80GB Each..
the two hard drive detects on BIOS when i enter the setup. but when i tried to install Windows Server 2003 on it.. the setup says.. setup was unable to continue setup because no hard disk on your system was detected,, something like that..
so it means the setup dont detect my hard drive.. but the bios yes..
so what is the problem? i try also to run with only one drive. but same problem..
Any solution to this?
Thank you very much
Hey guys!
I’m building a new computer as some of you probably already know haha but I do have a hard drive from a computer i built awhile ago and was wondering if it is any good.
the build im doing is basically:
i7 930 (think i might just wait to get the 950 when the price drops?)
Gtx 460
6gb ddr3 mem
the hard drive I have is this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc…-166-_-Product
it’s plenty of space for what I need (i also have a WD passport 250gb hd) plus I was planning on buying an SSD as well.
Is this hard drive any good? How fast is it comparable to something like the samsung spinpoint f3?
If it will work is there a way to erase everything on it?
thanks guys!
I’m looking to get two new drives to run in RAID 0. I do not know much about it other than what I have read.
My system is in my signature but I will have a 5870 arriving in the mail in the next few days. I’m looking for the fastest possible loading times for games. Not worried much about windows loading faster as I am buying a smaller SSD for windows only.
What drives do you guys suggest that are fast drives that don’t cost an arm and a leg? I do not want raptors or SSD’s. Would two WD Caviar Black drives in RAID 0 run fast? Or is there another combo of drives that would speed up my loading times?
My hard drive broke in my laptop and I’m not sure what hard drive’s are compatible with it. It is a Gateway MX6441 which had a Toshiba MK8025GAS in it. I found that it is an ATA-100 but I’m not sure if there is any other spec’s that have to match for it to fit into the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looking for something that’s atleast equivalent, around $40-50.
Thanks!
Dan
Hello ,
I am thinking about getting a new hard drive. This one in particular http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc…82E16822136544
My question is. Is it worth it? I now have normal IDE (about 4 years old) disk and am quite disappointed by its speed. Will the new drive provide significantly higher speed?
My sister gave me her "old" computer hp Pavillion zv5000 It’s in great shape but very slow. I unbloated it but still too slow to keep, so I decided to go and buy a 1Gb RAM. After I installed it, all I get is the XP screen then a glimpse of the infamous blue screen but too fast to read the error. I know it’s related to the new RAM but what could it be? The RAM sits properly in the slot and I can hear the click.
Here’s what it says on the original RAM
32MX64 SDRAM
256MB DDR 333 CL2.5
New RAM
DDR 333 2.5 1GX16 SO DIMM
Top pict is the original Bottom the one I just bought.

UPDATE I can’t even use the original RAM in it’s original location!!!
I tried pretty much under the sun in fact of moving around the RAMS and the locations
the zv5000 has one slot underneath the laptop where the CD rom, HD etc are locateds and one more slor which is right underneath the keyboard.
Here’s what I tried so far.
Just to make is simpler for the slot’s locations
A=Under the keyboard slot (hard acess)
B=Under the laptop where all the other stuff is,CD ROM, HD etc..(easy access)
1 put new RAM in B no success
2 put back old RAM in B same thing.
3 Put new RAM in A still the same it crashes right after that blue screen shows up
4 Put new RAM in A and old RAM in B same thing!!!
I think I exhausted all the possibilities!!!
I need to get a new external hard drive for backup. I have an older one but it is small and am running out of room. Are there any brands to stay away from, or anything better than others? Is USB 2.0 fast enough? Recommended backup software? I am probably just going to use it for backup, but if I start getting a lot of video, I may use it (or get another one) to store that on. Is USB 2.0 fast enough to watch video off of one?
